Meet Sallie. Unfortunately, Sallie’s  story is not very unusual. No explicit sensational descriptions distinguish her experiences of sexual abuse as more or less than someone else’s. She is a survivor, perhaps like you. It is a tragic reality. But she has come to understand this: She is more than the abuse. It has scarred her, but she is more. She despises what she had to work though to come to that conclusion, but she is glad she knows it.

The sexual abuse she experienced as a child launched her on a journey – a quest to move beyond what was done to her. The surprising destination was a life altering encounter with God… surprising because she wanted nothing to do with him. Her abuser used God in order to use her. In her confusion, she held God responsible for her abuse. Sallie despised church, people, and God. In many ways, her spirit was as damaged as the rest of her. Sallie became dark and overwhelmed – so much so that she thought suicide was the only way to find relief.

But God placed an obstacle in Sallie’s way and interrupted her plans for self destruction. As if a curtain was drawn back to expose the lies she believed, Sallie began to separate the acts of an abuser from the acts of God. She found a place of understanding. Sallie found a Savior who, like she, carried shame that was not his own. She found an Activist and an Advocate willing to march through darkness to show her light. Ultimately, Sallie found freedom. In turn, that quest led to the development of Committed to Freedom Ministries for survivors of childhood sexual abuse.
